Marti Emerald has served the San Diego region for more than 40 years.  She was an investigative journalist and consumer advocate, exposing corporate and government fraud, getting justice for consumers throughout California and the nation.

During her long career as a journalist, Marti continued to learn, going back to school at night and graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s degree when she was 50 years “young”.

After 30 years as a journalist, Marti served on the San Diego City Council, standing up for working families and taxpayers. She chaired the Council’s Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee during her entire eight years on the council, retiring in 2016 as President Pro-Tem.

Since retiring from City Hall, Marti has continued to serve the community, volunteering with the American Red Cross, helping communities recover from natural disasters, and serving as Vice President of the San Diego Fire Rescue Foundation.

In 2022, Marti was elected the newest member of the Sweetwater Union High School District Board. Marti quickly distinguished herself on the board and was awarded “Best First Term School Board Member of 2025” for San Diego County.

As a Trustee, Marti Emerald has continued to work with parents, students, and staff to restore trust in our district and make sure our students receive the world-class education they deserve.

Now, she’s running for reelection to finish her good work and make sure Sweetwater Union remains effective, accountable, and prosperous for generations to come.
